Attack on the Power Grid
This story was widely reported last week after details appeared in the Wall Street Journal. Basically the damage a lone sniper can do to the electric grid. The broader implications of the attack should be of interest to the engineering community. Key questions that will need to be addressed - (1.) What are the risks and consequences to the electric grid from a sniper attack like this?, (2,) What can be done to prevent an attack like this?, (3.) Can we come up with a resiliency metric that is useful when we also consider risks and consequences of terror attacks and natural disasters?, (4.) Are old fashioned bullets a bigger threat than the world of bits and bytes of cyberterrorism (the ultimate risk is probably the optimal combination of bullets/bits/bytes)?, and (5.) What are the lessons for the rest of the infrastructure matrix?
