The backpack or field bag for an engineer should include the basics for 2014 - iPhone, iPad, camera (I am old school - still like a higher quality camera with a telephoto lense), scale, Moleshine, pad of paper, calculator (the HP-15 classic for me), laptop, etc.
I am going to add one other that I think is going to be standard - a GoPro camera. The world of screens just dominates our culture - techno-cultural inflection points always make it (slowly) into engineering. DIY time lapse of your projects will become the norm.
