#TBT - What can the canal do for you? A navigable #TrinityRiver became a reality in 1963 when the United States Army Corps of Engineers approved the plans. By 1965, Congress had passed legislation authorizing the Trinity River Project. The project included a 300 mile-long barge canal from Dallas to the Gulf of Mexico. Voters were asked to approve a property tax in 1973 to fund the project. Cartoons, like the one below, were used to sway voters both for and against the canal.
