Climate Change and Wheat

This is a very interesting report that was released last week by Anne-Marie Slaughter of Princeton - - The Arab Spring and Climate Change.  I will let others debate correlation versus cause and effect, but several of the findings should start to wake people up.

Here is a sample - -
  • The Arab Spring occurred during the same time in 2010/11 of a once-in-a-century winter drought in China.  China is a key producer of wheat.
  • You also had record breaking heat waves and flooding in other key wheat producing countries -- Ukraine, Russia, Canada, and Australia.
  • This produced a doubling of wheat prices.
  • The world's top nine wheat importers are in the Middle East.  Seven had political protests.
  • Bread provides 1/3 of the caloric uptake in Egypt.
