LucidPipe Power Systems

This is worth following as it develops - - low-cost electricity from gravity-fed water pipes by Lucid Energy.

The San Antonio Water System (SAWS) will be the first site of an in-pipe hydropower installation in Texas.  This is the press release from the SAWS website:

LucidPipe is a water-to-wire system that produces clean, low-cost renewable energy from fast-moving water inside large water mains. The SAWS installation will include three spherical turbines inside one section of 24-inch steel pipe.

“We are very pleased to be one of the first water utilities in the U.S. to evaluate in-pipe hydropower using the LucidPipe technology,” said Steve Clouse, SAWS chief operating officer and senior vice president. “Utilizing our water infrastructure to generate renewable energy fits our philosophy of environmentally smart solutions because it taps an existing resource — water moving through our pipelines — to provide low-impact, low-cost, renewable energy.”

The SAWS installation is slated for construction in early 2013, and will be part of the Regional Carrizo Water Supply Project. The effort adds yet another facet to SAWS’ impressive portfolio of sustainability initiatives, which includes the nation’s largest wastewater recycling system, large-scale biosolid reuse and commercial methane gas production.

Portland-based Lucid Energy is a provider of renewable energy systems and pioneer in the development of in-pipe hydropower.
