The First Vertical Tsunami Refuge in the U.S.

This is great example of community design with disaster resilience coming together.  The city of Westport, Washington is on the coast and in a high tsunami risk zone.  So when the community needed a new school they did something that more and more resilience minded communities need to be thinking about.  They incorporated a rooftop refuge into the design - rising a little taller than 55 feet, the building will allow water to pass through without compromising the structure, which can shelter 700 citizens.  Look for refuge design to spread across the Washington coast.
